The Zodiac Series: Aquarius (21 January - 19 February)

Clever / Witty / Humanitarian / Inventive / Sarcastic / Rebellious / Aloof / Original

Aquarius, the Water-bearer, is the third in my Zodiac series. I wanted this to look quite different from my previous two drawings (Taurus and Capricorn) As Aquarius is an air sign, compared to the earthiness of Taurus and Capricorn, I wanted Aquarius to be tonally lighter and much more ethereal in style. Researching Aquarius I couldn't find many negative qualities, they are apparently 'visionaries, progressive souls who love to spend time thinking about how things can be better', 'at a near-genius level, so their minds churn out some amazing things', 'a genius that borders on insanity'. My little brother is Aquarius and I would definitely attribute these qualities to him (although I would not tell him so)

Stylistically I looked to Ancient Greece - with all the genius references I decided that this civilisation would be the ideal starting point for my Aquarius. Statues such as Alexandros of Antioch's Venus de Milo (but with arms) and other classical sculptures were my inspiration: draped fabric, braided hair and a classic feel, with a kind, intelligent expression. The drawing was fairly straightforward, the lack of flowing locks was a time-saver, although the drapes and creases on the dress and the flowing water made up for that.

The Aquarian flower is an orchid; I added a hint of pink to balance out the green-blue colour (the colour of the sea and sky)

The Zodiac Series will be available as a gift pack of an A5 mounted print with a greetings card, for 20 - I thought this would make a great present, and a perfect size to post. As usual the limited edition prints (of 100) will be 50 for A3 and 95 for A2. Contact me directly sara@saras-designs.co.uk to order.
