Review: Remedy Cafe Bar

6 Fountain Street
028 9032 9800

On their Facebook Page, Remedy describe themselves as a 'cool new city centre cafe bar situated on Fountain Street, Belfast. Our breakfast Club offers the best brekkie in the city and our Posh Sausage Sandwich is the bizzo.’ Now, as someone who could easily forgo all other meals and eat breakfast three times a day I had to give this a try. Also, Remedy has excellent taste in art - my prints are hanging on the wall and my ego does loooove to hang out beside my work. This has not prejudiced my review in any way!

Remedy opens and serves breakfast from 8am, making it the perfect pre-work treat or early morning meeting place. As a vegetarian I had to take a carnivorous friend along to give a fair opinion of the menu, and my lovely friend Dearbhla obliged.

We arrived at 8.30am and were promptly greeted by the friendly staff. First off, the décor is very cool, previously when I had popped in to hang my prints the builders were still there, so it was great to see the place finished. The interior is a juxtaposition of industrial rawness and antique opulence, with warm lighting and the odd animal skull thrown in for good measure. The music is atmospheric but unobtrusive. Overall, the effect is very Spitalfields/Brick Lane (the cool end, not the dodgy curry houses)

The menu is comprehensive, with a good vegetarian selection, healthy options, as well as a range of cooked breakfasts and pancakes. I went for the Eggs Florentine and Dearbhla decided to try the Posh Sausage Sandwich.

Eggs Florentine is one of my favourite dishes, but it is unfortunately quite uncommon around here and I would never be bothered making it myself. The last time I had it was on a shoot at the G Hotel in Galway, and I was obsessed.

The Remedy version was awesome: a split toasted muffin, spinach and soft poached eggs, all topped with hollandaise sauce.

The sausage sandwich was also a winner. Dearbhla reckoned it 'was an interesting twist on the usual sausage between two bits of bread offering. The seeded bap was lovely and the applewood cheese and onions really set the whole thing off. Proper pash!’ The coffee is also worth a mention - as a freelancer I have spent many years coffee-shop hopping and this was definitely one of the better americanos in town.

Remedy is a great asset to the city centre, I always found the better breakfast places tend to be situated around South Belfast, so it’s great to have somewhere like this in town. I’ve heard good things about their cocktails and dinner menu and am really looking forward to trying that out. Its situation across the street from Voodoo and a five minute walk from the Cathedral Quarter makes it the perfect place to begin a night out, as well as a great start to the day.
