Dates for your Diary Spring 2014
Spring 2014 is shaping up to be a fantastic season for art and fashion lovers in Northern Ireland, with a bumper crop of events happening in March/April.
Una Rodden Fashion Presentation
When: Wednesday 12 March 2014, 7.00pm
Where: Aether and Echo, Lower Garfield St
My favourite NI designer is showcasing her new collection at a fashion film screening and model presentation in cool new bar Aether and Echo. I’m really excited about this one, as Una and I have collaborated on a few of the designs. I have re-hashed some of my illustrations into fabric prints and had them printed on silk. This appears to be very timely, as so many fashion houses including Prada and Chanel are obviously taking Oscar Wilde’s advice to heart: ‘One should either be a work of art or wear a work of art’, the S/S14 catwalks were awash with wearable art.
I picked up the silk earlier this week and dropped it into Una. Although I loved the fabric (see below) and was very excited to take delivery of it, as soon as I passed it to Una she pinned it loosely into shape on a mannequin, and to quote Rachel Zoe (because my vocab is not dramatic enough) ‘I DIE’. Seriously, these pieces are going to be amazing, I can’t wait to see the final outcome. Anyone that has an event that they need a killer dress for, needs to come to this show!

Belfast Fashion Week Charity Catwalk Challenge
When: Friday 21 March 2014, 8pm
As always, BFW is a week of exciting and innovative fashion events. Unfortunately , this season I will be on a location shoot for most of the week, but I will be back in time of the Charity Catwalk Challenge! The Belfast FASHIONWEEK Charity Catwalk Challenge will involve ten charity shops and ten bloggers/stylists who will team up to create ten catwalk worthy outfits for our top ten models to be shown on the runway during FASHIONWEEK. I have been teamed with my favourite charity vintage shop: Oxfam. I’ve been working with these guys for years on various events and they never disappoint! This show will be followed by Paddy McGurgan’s make-up show which, knowing Paddy, is guaranteed to be an extravaganza of creativity.

Carrie Neely Contemporary Art’s Art Auction for the NSPCC
When: 24th-26th March 2014
Where: The MAC
Carrie Neely Contemporary Art brings to you an art exhibition with a challenge – how high will you go in a bidding war for a unique artwork, when the proceeds go to the vital work of the NSPCC?! will be on show in the MAC, Belfast from 24 – 26 March 2014, incorporating a silent auction, and Carrie is hoping that art lovers from across Northern Ireland will dig deep in aid of the NSPCC’s Changing Childhoods NI Appeal.
Carrie does fantastic work, both with the NSPCC and with the local art scene. Carrie’s previous Art for NSPCC took place at the Merchant Hotel, with over £25,000 being raised for the charity. This year’s auction is set to be even bigger, with over 100 pieces set to go under the hammer. Work from established local artists such as Neil Shawcross and JB Vallely and international artworks by Damien Hirst and Picasso sit alongside pieces by emerging artists and the cream of local student talent. With artworks starting at £70, there is a vast range of artworks to suit all budgets.
Event organiser Carrie Neely said, “It is a huge honour to be able to host this auction in aid of NSPCC, and my thanks go to all the artists who have submitted work. The pieces form a really strong exhibition, which I know visitors to the MAC will enjoy, but my hope is really that people are inspired to contribute to the vital work of the NSPCC by bidding for their favourite piece. Knowing that a piece of art you bought has made a difference to a child’s life will make it all the more special.”
The auction is now live online: http://www.32auctions.com/artforNSPCC
I am delighted that my recent fashion illustration 'The Birthday Girl' will be one of the works featured.
by Lee Boyd, Sara O'Neill, Lenka Davidikova and Michael Geddis.
When: Week beginning 7 April 2014
Where: Ulster Hall
Although I swore I wouldn’t hold an exhibition for many many years, after the near-breakdowns caused by my two solo exhibitions, I really couldn’t resist being a part of this event. Through this exhibition we hope to show the diversity of this everyday material, which we each use in diverse and unique ways, with styles ranging from the realist and abstract to the surreal and Group Space biomorphic. I will be showing recent fashion illustrations and some of the originals from my Zodiac series. More information to follow!
