Ask the Expert: A/W 13: Slip dresses

Q. I'm looking for a dress that isn't too prom-style that I can wear during the day as well as to parties/events. I have long dark wavy hair and pale skin and my budget is £150. Can you please help?

A. My absolute favourite style of dress this season is the slip dress. For me, it harks back to the 90’s when, at 15, I used to try and sneak out of the house in a Courtney Love-style vintage slip, much to the horror of my poor mother. This is a style I am revisting now, but in a much less trashy way (one hopes).

The slip is one of the most versatile items around this season- I picked a beautiful beaded version up a couple of weeks back and wore it out dancing at the weekend with elegant strappy sandals and a black coat, and during the week I wore it under a fine knit jumper, with battered brown ankle boots, a biker jacket and long scarf- my ‘skirt’ got many compliments. They also look great worn over a sharp white shirt, and belted. Without a doubt the best versions available right now are in Zara- they are bang-on with so many trend this season. They have lace-trimmed lingerie-inspired slips, a dark floral print version and a smart grey check. They come in a variety of lengths- mini, knee and full-length- depending on your height, you should probably go for knee length as it will allow you to move seamlessly from day to night. With your colouring, any of these dark versions will suit you- although classic black will probably be the most useful addition to your wardrobe. Prices vary from £35.99 to £109.
